Abstract

|
Changes in the level of cerebrospinal fluid total cholesterol and lactic dehydrogenase activities in 12 cases of tuberculous meningitis and 27cases of encephalitis Japonica were investigated including 14 cases of healthy children as control.
Normal values in the 14 cases were found to be almost similar to those reported by others, thus the total cholesterol being zero mg/dl and the L.D.H. a ctivities 74 units.
The 7cases of tuberculous meningitis and 16 cases of encephalitis Japonica in non-comatous state showed slight increase in both total cholesterol level and L. D.H. activity, whereas the other 5 cases of tuberculous meningitis and 11 cases of encephalitis Japonica in comatous state showed markedly increased in both total cholesterol level and L.D.H. activity.
The increase in the L.D.H. activites was more pronounced in encephalitis Japonica than in the tuberculous meningitis.
The results of this statistical study seem significantin view of the fact that the P value is under 0.01.
